Mr Liaquat graduated from University of Glasgow medical school in 2002 and did his Basic Surgical Training in the West of Scotland. After a year as a Registrar in London, where he worked at Kings College Hospital and St Georges Hospital, he came back to complete his Neurosurgical training in Scotland during which he trained in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. He went back to St Georges Hospital to do a Sub-specialist Fellowship in Neurosurgery, where he gained experience in all aspects of General Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology including Awake Craniotomy, Fluorescence guided tumour resection and management of Low Grade Gliomas. After the Fellowship he returned to Edinburgh to take up a Consultant post at the Western General Hospital.
His operative NHS practice includes management of spinal pathologies including Degenerative Spine, General Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology (sub-speciality interest).
Mr Liaquat has a keen interest in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and has completed a Masters in Surgical Education to help him improve his educational skills. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Clinical Tutor at the University of Edinburgh and has recently been accredited as a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators.
In addition, Mr Liaquat has research interests in Neurotrauma, Neuro-Oncology and Surgical Assessment. He has over 15 research paper/abstract publications and has presented at National and International meetings.
Optimising Surgical Resection in Low Grade Glioma Patients
This seminar will explore current advances in surgical techniques and technology that can enhance the extent of resection in low grade gliomas, such as awake craniotomy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. The seminar will also explore the role of functional MRI imaging and neuro-navigation, as well as intraoperative MRI and ultrasound, in achieving maximum safe resection.
